Animal Crossing : City Folk

Welcome to my Animal Crossing City Folk collection page! Here you'll find a "collection" of my thoughts on the game, a gameplay blog, and information about my town. For now, it's a WIP, but I'll be semi-regularly updating the blog as I play and working on the other pages! I figured I'll just upload it anyways even though it's not finished since the blog is getting pretty lengthy. Take a look around~

Rambling About AC

Animal Crossing City Folk is a 2008 game developed by Nintendo for their Wii console. Out of all the mainline AC games, I think most people (if they remember it exists) would say this is the underdog. A lot of people will say "its too similar to the older ones!" and while I agree; and I'm glad that New Leaf later shook up the formula, is that really a bad thing? Wild World and ACGC are near-universally loved, so why is this one any different? I have a lot of fondness for this game and think people should give it more of a chance, so I'm just gonna blab on about it here... Continue if you're into this sorta thing.
Features

In terms of features I love, the city is so nice, atmospheric and relaxing. As well as useful! Instead of having to wait for people like Redd to show up at your town, you can just travel to the city instead. The music is memorable and pleasant and you can peoplewatch (animalwatch?) villagers walking around. I also loved that they brought back the reset surveillance center from the original game. As well as the addition of Phineas, who has no real purpose besides giving you fun objects to mess around with. That's the kind of thing I love about AC, just having silly fun features for the hell of it.

Along with the previously mentioned features the need to have a friend visit your town to progress (Nook store upgrades) was removed in this game, making this game much more future-proof. That's the kind of thing I worry about when servers get shut down (such as the 3ds servers recently) is that some of these games will become "bricked" by the removal of multiplayer... But for this game, it's not a worry.

Some lesser known features of City Folk...

  • The town fund! I like how it adds a secondary progression besides upgrading your house.
  • Gyroid storage is really useful since they can take up so much space.
  • THE HOTKEYS THAT LET YOU CHANGE TOOLS!! I feel like people don't talk about this enough, it's such a good QOL feature and makes the older games dificult to replay lolol. Simplicity

Maybe a controversial opinion, but I really prefer the limited creativity of the older games. For me, AC is about enjoying your simple town life, and making the most of the limited methods of customization youre given. Theres some phrase like "Limitation brings out creativity" (see here) and I think that shows in these older games. You really had to make the most of your pixel-art patterns and your default building placements, and I loved that! I think giving so much creative freedom in the newer games kinda leads to you fussing over the appearance of your town way too much, wanting it to be totally perfect... which isn't the vibe I like for these games. This game should be a destressor, not a "oh my god I need this house to be moved over 1 tile or my town is RUINED" game. Basically, NL+NH are more like sandbox games to me, while the first three entries are relaxing life-sims.
    Deluxe

A modder known as "Aurum" and several others have done amazing work on a mod called Animal Crossing: City Folk Deluxe which greatly improves on the base game in small but meaningful ways. I highly recommend it to anybody who is looking to play this game!! It's very easy to get working on Dolphin emulator, but to play it on official hardware you need a homebrewed wii/wiiu and a retail disc. The mod features...

  • 200+ added villagers
  • All events/holidays, even region-specific ones
  • Added items, unused and new
  • Skin tone selection
  • Progression is made less random
  • Can get haircuts of either gender (actually i think you can do this in the basegame but w/e)
  • Paintings have forged versions (feature from New Leaf)
  • Option to toggle grass deterioration (!!!!)
  • BASICALLY everything is better about this mod, there's really no downsides. Just play City Folk with this mod if you can. Overall

I think this game is awesome and so special. If you think I have a nostalgia bias, I have to add that I played Wild World 100x more as a kid... I'm way more nostalgic for WW. But whenever I'm on an AC kick, I always end up preferring this game. Of course, the missing features from WW are sorely missed (villager portraits..) but overall I think CF is a better experience, and I'd go as far as to say it's my favorite in the series. In an ideal world, we'd have a perfect blend of WW, CF, and gamecube, and that would be the ultimate AC game. But for now.. this is pretty great! If you also love City Folk, or have been inspired to try the mod from my page, I'd love to hear about it on my guestbox or email! 'v'

    11-01-2025

today we are welcoming november with MUSHROOMS growing all over the place. i remember hearing about this but i never saw it for myself!! very interesting. i also ended up really liking this forest wall and put it up in my attic.

im really liking roscoe. his design is just super cool and i love horsies in general. i think id love to get an elephant villager too, if i had to ask for any... but overall im really happy with my villagers rn.

idk why but i love gala's room. its so strange and also she plays "two days ago" in her room. if you dont know, that song is actually based off of the beatles! i am a big beatles fan so its a really fun homage to see. she also has an apple tv which is really cute... francine has one too. (i wonder if gala = apple = apple records? and thats why they gave her a beatles song in her room? im probably thinking about this way too hard lmao)

went to the city to pick up a painting and i decided to check with lyle and saw MY ROOM in the showcase, which was a major jumpscare. it was my ugly attic too. not even my cute bedroom or living room...!!! but anyways it was still cool. also i love lyle he's so charming and cute ❤︎.
